Isle of Wight Weekend, January 2003

For the second year, we visited Totland Bay Youth Hostel for a weekend break as a group.

Saturday started with a full cooked breakfast from Peggy...

...just the thing before we set out on a walk to the Needles and back.

Up on Headon Warren the cloud was just a bit low!

Our photo call at the old gun emplacement was mistier but less windy than last year.

But as we approached the Needles Old Battery, the sun slipped out (for a while at least).

Up on the high downs, the mist returned but the walking was easy...

...even if some people have to walk over an obstruction!

And we did get a view of Headon Warren without mist!

After dropping down to the High Down Inn for lunch, some of us continued the walk while others took their leisure elsewhere. The walkers were rewarded with a clear view of Hurst Castle.

And sunshine on the beach at Freshwater Bay.

Some of the non-walkers went down to the bay and were caught by the waves.

Returning to Freshwater, the sun set over Tennyson Down.

The evening was very relaxed - a Burns supper, prepared by Peggy, and a session in the "quiet" room. Next morning, after breakfast and clearing up we were ready to leave. But what do you do with left over ice cream?

First stop was Carisbrooke Castle, with views over the surrounding countryside.

And lots of walls to explore.

Then on to Arreton Barns, where we'd danced last year with Wight Bells and friends. We were expected, with tables ready!

But before eating, we had to dance.

Wight Bells joined us.

Green Willow got its second outing (we got it right this time!)

Then all-in for a Dorset Four Hand Reel.

As ever we concluded with the Rose

And the combined band were encircled for the finale.

A most enjoyable weekend - here's to next year!
